Workshop on GI Rights for Lawyers and Law Students

Continuing Legal Education (CLE). This workshop will occur on Friday, February 9,
2007, from 9 am to 1 pm with lunch following at Crooked Creek Christian Camp
located 3 miles south of Washington, Iowa.

Registration Fee: $50

This workshop will instruct attorneys on how to protect the ?rights of military
personnel. ?It will specifically address the issues of: ?discharges, attaining
conscientious objector status, habeas law for C.O.s, and assisting GIs arrested for
being AWOL. [Application will be made for 1 hour of Ethics credit.]

Instructors: The workshop instructors will be Deborah H. Karpatkin and J.E. McNeil.
Karpatkin, a 1980 graduate of Columbia Law ?School, is a former staff counsel for
the ACLU of New Jersey and a current board member and cooperating attorney for
the New York Civil Liberties ?Union. Her civil rights and employment rights law
practice in New York City includes the representation of conscientious objectors. J.
E. McNeil is the Executive Director of the Center on Conscience & War in
Washington, D.C. She has been a practicing attorney for twenty-five years, a
substantial portion of which has been devoted to representing conscientious
objectors.
